How to cultivate 1000 True Fans

“Hey, my beautiful shining stars!”

When YouTuber Charisma Star welcomes her audience, it’s a special moment.

If she’s Live, her viewers respond with heartfelt declarations of love and emojis in Live Chat.

A couple of them exclaim in the chat, “Can’t wait for your baby’s arrival!!”

Charisma Star has grown her channel to a stunning 910k subscriber base.

How did she do that?

Hi Upview fam,

With the increasing AI applications in the creator world, it is becoming more and more possible to delight your audience.

Whether it is in generating content, reviewing content, or analyzing the market.

But, if your goal is to create true fans — AI has limitations.

And that’s your competitive advantage too.

1000 True Fans

In 2008, Kevin Kelly wrote 1000 true fans.

In his words,

“A true fan is defined as a fan that will buy anything you produce. These diehard fans will drive 200 miles to see you sing; they will buy the hardback and paperback and audible versions of your book […]”

You get the point.

But how to achieve that?

Six ways to cultivate true fan-ship

In addition to creating useful content and other strategies, this one is more humane and requires connecting with people.

1. Ask viewers for their opinions or suggestions

Epic Rap Battles with its 14M subscribers has been doing this for a long time.

They ask their fans ‘who won, who’s next?’ and then ask them to decide ‘who’s next!’

2. Create videos based on audience requests

Screenjunkies asks for audience suggestions for their Honest Trailer content. The most-requested idea gets created.

3. Respond to comments in your videos

This is the most important part of connecting with the audience. Your fans need to be heard in the comment section.

The best part is, when you respond to one fan, there are hundreds or thousands more who read your comment. Reading your words and feeling related to you.

4. Call out individual viewers by name

Who doesn’t like to be surprisingly called out by their favorite celebrity?

Just calling out one fan’s name in appropriate context, creates a powerful effect on other viewers. It shows your deep connection with them.

5. Feature content from your viewers in your videos

With more people creating fan art — as recorded in the YouTube Culture & Trends Report 2023 — it is a great idea to provide a spotlight to your viewers. Either in your videos or something like what Vsauce did. They created a dedicated fan art channel.

6. Invite viewers to come on the show!

This is a truly satisfying moment for all the viewers and creators alike.

Meeting the viewers in real life.

For example, in this video, creator Hannah Hart meets her viewers all around the world.

So, which of these ways do you use to connect with your audience? How has been your experience?
