⬆️ Strategies That Worked: Stef's YouTube Recovery Unpacked

Hi Upview fam,

Last week, we talked about ⬆️ Optimizing Video Titles and Descriptions for Better Search Visibility. I hope you found it useful.

Thanks to everyone who has marked their calendar for this weekend's webinar! Details at the end.

As per my promise, I want to keep sharing strategies in action.

If you remember, a few weeks back, I shared creator Azul’s story. By utilizing such strategies, he added 30,000+ subscribers in just 2 months.

Similarly, team Upview had the opportunity to contribute to another creator’s success.

Stef The Alter Nerd

If you watch Stef’s videos, your inner voice will say: BOLD!

For example, look at this thumbnail and video:

It is not just her thumbnails.

But Stef uses unique sass in delivering news and opinions about the British Royal Family.

You may think Stef would have had an easy sail, but that’s not the truth.

This niche is quite competitive.

And we will see that in a minute.

Since its inception on April 21, 2021, Stef grew her audience to 58.8k subscribers, with 4.2 million channel views!

The majority of her audience consists of females aged 35-65+ years from the USA and UK.

Rough patch

Before Stef’s channel hit the rough patch, this is what her growth looked like:

400k views per month

2.5k new subscribers added per month

But something happened in April 2023.

Stef’s channel experienced a sharp decline in these two numbers:

Views plummeted to 240k per month

Subscriber growth turned negative 314, i.e. more people were leaving the channel than joining it!

The diagnosis

Upon Stef’s approach to Upview, our diagnosis said, the main reason behind the downturn was due to a shift in content approach.

Once the overall diagnosis was clear, we could suggest appropriate action.

Strategies in action

• Focus on Targeted Content

As seen in Azul’s case, we noticed keywords such as “Megan Markle” and “Prince Harry” driving more engagement. We suggested targeting content on these lines, especially because of the recent coronation ceremony and related developments.

• Thumbnail Optimization

Another thing that we noticed was the stagnant Click-Through Rate (CTR) on Stef’s channel. At the time of diagnosis, the channel’s CTR was between 7-12%.

We knew she could do quite better with thumbnail optimization.

• External Traffic

Interestingly, a whopping 40% of her traffic originated from Twitter alone!

Considering Twitter’s audience and platform, we suggested Stef share her YouTube shorts on Twitter. And adding YouTube video links to those shorts for additional traction.

• Content Format

Many times, creators come up with novel content formats and struggle to make them work.

Stef was trying to make her animated shorts work. But the audience wasn’t responding.

We noticed this and advised discontinuing them and focusing on other content formats. The ones that are already working fine.

• Keyword-focused Shorts

Using YouTube’s shorts is a good way to increase visibility. We suggested Stef create shorts focused on relevant and targeted keywords.

Content around “Prince Harry” and “Meghan Markle”.Together with her long-form content and shorts, the channel would strategically increase in ranking.

The result

• CTR Improvement

The immediate gain for Stef’s channel was her CTR!

It increased from 7-12% to 12-20%!

• Back on Growth Path

Stef’s channel got back on its growth path:

464.3k views every month

+506 subscribers added every month

• Revenue Boost

We know these strategies work because of the single most important factor in a creator's life: revenue.

Stef saw an increase in her revenue from the time she started implementing them.

And…that’s our expertise in building upview.ai

That’s how we contributed to Stef The Alter Nerd’s channel revival.
