Hi Upview fam,
If you remember, in my last letter, I asserted that “revenue” is the single most important factor in a creator’s life. Because it makes the creative process sustainable.
But as you might know, YouTube is a dynamic platform.
They keep updating their terms every few years.
Including their monetization terms and policy.
I wanted to draw your attention to these latest updates, so that you can review your trajectory and if required, course-correct.
On June 13th, 2023 YouTube’s official blog announced a few changes to their monetization terms.
These changes were significant.
They opened doors for millions of creators who were struggling with a lack of monetization opportunities.
Check out this list to see whether you’re up to the speed for the YouTube monetization:
Before the announcement, every budding creator was struggling to see that 1,000 mark in their subscriber count.
Not anymore.
If you have 500 subscribers, you’re eligible for the YouTube Partner Program, YPP for short (which allows YT monetization).
We have talked about consistency as the main part of the strategy in most of my past letters.
Now, YouTube has provided its objective measurement.
To be eligible for YPP, upload at least 3 public videos in the last 90 days.
In the past, for many creators, getting a cumulative 4,000 hours of watch time in a year was more difficult than getting 1,000 subscribers.
There is a reason behind it.
You may convince someone to hit ‘Subscribe’, but their watch time requires greater commitment and depends on several factors: such as the quality of your content, the competition, etc.
YouTube has reduced this to 3,000 hours.
Though it may seem easy to get viral YouTube Shorts and amass a million or two views, in reality, it is difficult.
YouTube reduced its earlier YouTube Shorts limit from 10 million → 3 million views. Of course, in 90 days.
This move would allow budding creators to get incentivized earlier in their journey.
Based on 2022-23 data, this was the scenario:
Norway: $43.15
Germany: $38.85
Moldova: $29.50
Algeria: $24.50
South Korea: $17.00
Sweden: $18.18
Finland: $14.90
United Kingdom: $13.75
Canada: $13.50
United States: $13.00
In case you don’t know about CPM, YouTube CPM stands for “Cost Per Thousand” views (or “Cost Per Mille”) and represents the amount advertisers pay for every 1,000 ad impressions on a YouTube video.
Creators retain 55% of this ad money on their videos, whereas YouTube gets the rest.
